Mary Patt's Story

Life After high school, I attended Marylhurst, majoring in English and minoring in Art and French. I immediately went to graduate school and earned my MAT from Reed. Having finished a three semester program in two, I was temporarily burnt out on school and went to Seattle with a college friend. There I worked for the P.O. for a year, sending packages to Vietnam. Other exciting experiences from that time included babysitting for Ted Bundy's girlfriend's child and being alone in the infamous Volkswagen with Ted whenever he delivered me home from the job. I was one of the original staff members at Timberline High School, which opened in 1970, and took time off only to be with my son, adopted 1975; later, when he was an exchange student in New Zealand, I took a sabbatical in Montana and reconnected with painting and writing. I retired from Timberline in 2003 and although I miss the students, I do not miss grading all those essays! After divorcing in 1979, I thought marriage was not my vocation, but an old college beau found me by calling the sheriff in Chester, Montana. We are now happily married and living in Sherwood, Oregon. School Missed kindergarten because I had to have surgery, but started first grade at age 5. Mom taught us to read, so primers were dull. Loved grade school and desired homework! Enjoyed the polite Chester boys who made sure every girl danced. Most grateful to parents for sending me to GFCCHS because it opened horizons. Though I carry Catholic guilt, enjoyed Central. Remember dances: fantasies before, realities after. Recall hours of friends discussing crushes, crying, being silly. Smile at our innocence. Wish boys and girls knew how to be friends then - might have cleared up some confusion! Remember ballgames, band trips, cruising the drag, avoiding "flyboys," science fairs, retreats, and winning float contests at Homecoming for 3 years straight. Recall Kennedy's assassination, the Cuban Missile Crisis scare, the Passion Play, and first time we played GFHS. Fond memories of "first love" and other firsts. Mardi Gras?! Ever the optimist there. Senior stairs, student council, speech meets. Candy sales in seedy bars. Senior religion class - b.s. from unmarried celibates. (Supposedly) Aren't most of them married now!? Recall writing US Constitution for talking in Ferda's class - finally phone book pages. Kalispell tournament; innocent all-nighter. Graduation parties & sad goodbyes. College Entered Marylhurst, a Catholic women's school, fall 1964. Major -English, Minors: Art and French. Remember being campused and ...Expand for more
our attempts to communicate through cans and string. Remember the phone hoggers - one phone per wing. Dances where we were supposed to greet guys "like they were guests in our homes" - yeah sure. Dress dinner - all those ladies stampeding like Crispy Critters when doors opened. Forbidden topics: classes, boyfriends, politics, religion. What the heck did we talk about!? Walks to Bonny Lynn for those pizzas and burgers. Trying to find a place to park with boyfriends where cops wouldn't shine the flashlights into cars and send us home. The bowling team and out of town tourneys. Rivalry with Portland State. Work study jobs - trying to control those dang polishing machines that tossed us around like ragdolls. Having to wear heels to dances when I already towered over most guys. Chorus - the time we sang the Bach Mass with the Portland Junior Symphony. The line-up for mail each morning and the joy when letters, not ads filled box. Falling in love; being abandoned; rejecting some good ones and accepting some jerks. That rope swing over the canyon. The rocks by the river - the sun, camaraderie and the day THE flame of those years told me goodbye there. The Barn Dance at UP. Pizzas at Shakey's in Tualatin. Civil Rights and Peace marches. My favorite teacher, Sister Rita Rose and her kindness and inspiration. Sister JR and our friendly disagreements - her telling the quad we had grounds for divorce, seeing our disorder. Sneaking out of O'Hara when we were seniors. The last formal dance and our group picture. The hard-edge minimalism in the art classes... Rolling up our pants under our coats on the weekends when we went outside. Sister Marian Frances and our poetry seminar. MRA and Sr. Marita Joan. I received an excellent education at MC, one that gave me the background to succeed at other colleges and to be proficient in my profession as an English teacher. Reed - remember feeling too straight there; finding a joint on the stairway; war protests and student strikes; challenging classes. Fellow MAT's. Teaching at Marshall. Finishing a 3 semester program in 2 - just barely! Loved the philosophy that teachers need to know the content of their discipline, and not necessarily all the educational theory. Loved the seminars and the chances to think and write critically. Since these days I have attended, UW, PLU, UPS, TESC, St. Martin's, Seattle Pacific, University of New Hampshire, U of Montana, Smith, Harvard, St. Mary's College (Moraga) and especially enjoyed the writing classes at UW, particularly PSWP. I plan to continue learning forever.
